Both these sauces are a blend of cream and tomato sauce, however there lies a subtle difference in their taste and flavor. Coming from the same core ingredients, they are bound to have similar taste but a slight difference in the proportion of ingredients creates the change in taste.

Butter chicken is a more creamier blend of cream and tomato puree with spices whereas on the other hand tikka masala is a creamy blend of tomato puree with onion sauce mixed with various spices. On a comparative, tikka masala is less creamier, so if you want a creamy gravy, the sauce that you are looking for is butter chicken. In terms of tomato flavor, tikka masala has greater tinge of a tangy tomato flavor to it as compared to butter chicken.

Going back to the origin of these two dishes, there is a difference in the place of origin of these dishes also. Butter chicken is originally an Indian dish which was birthed in a restaurant in North India, whereas tikka masala is inherently in 1970s by a Bangladeshi chef in Glasgow, Scotland.

Both these mouth-watering delicacies can be enjoyed with naan, paratha or rice.
